NCbreadth of study 5d: investigating different kinds of art and craft

Pupils look at examples of Chinese and Japanese kites from the museum’s collection and learn about their history and construction. During the session, pupils will have the opportunity to make and decorate a paper kite using traditional designs.

  • Chinese Lanterns

NC breadth of study 3g: celebrations

Pupils discover some of the history and symbolism of lanterns with particular reference to the Chinese Lantern Festival. During the session pupils will create a colourful paper lantern decorated with traditional symbols and motifs.

  • Paper cuts

Curriculum links: Art, Religious Education

NC KSU 2b: try out tools and techniques

Pupils will study examples of this traditional craft from the museum’s extensive and beautiful collection of paper cuts. Used as decorations, especially at Chinese New Year, they are rich in symbolism and story. Pupils create simple paper cuts using templates or their imagination.

  • Origami

Curriculum links: Art

NC breadth of study 5d: investigating different kinds of art and craft

Pupils learn the ancient Japanese art of paper folding by looking at examples specially created for the museum by the British Origami society. Pupils will create a variety of traditional forms using authentic origami paper.
