Chinese Brush Painting

NC breadth of study 5d: investigate art, craft and design
Pupils will examine authentic examples of Chinese painting as well as the special tools and material used. They will discover how ink sticks are made and ground to make liquid pigment on slate ink stones. Pupils will learn the basic techniques of holding and manipulating Chinese brushes to recreate a simple painting produced from the museum’s collection.

Symbolism in East Asian Art
Curriculum links: Art
NC breadth of study 4b: codes and conventions and how these are used to represent ideas, beliefs and values in works of art
Pupils will have the opportunity to handle objects and learn about the range of symbols used in East Asian Art. In particular we will look at fabulous animals and religious symbolism. The handling session will be followed by a learning trail around the museum.

The Image of Buddha
Curriculum links: Religious Education, Art
QCA Unit 7d: Who was Gotama Buddha
Pupils will revise the story of Siddhartha and see how it has been represented in Buddhist art. Pupils will handle Buddhist artefacts and examine the meaning of some of the symbols used. Pupils will then have an opportunity to construct their own Buddha out of air drying clay following the principles of iconometrics.

Relief Printing

NC breadth of study 5c: using a range of materials and processes
Pupils will look at examples of Japanese woodblock prints and learn some of the basic techniques using simple, safe tools and materials.
